Energy and Climate Change

Energy policy and climate action are cornerstones for building a sustainable future for Europe. The challenges in both fields remain however huge and are interlinked. The availability of a sustainable and affordable low carbon fuel mix is crucial for the European Union to enable its economy to meet the climate targets without putting at stake the competitiveness of its industries. Growth, competitiveness and climate policy can be mutually reinforcing.

Energy policy, which includes a continued emphasis on energy efficiency, contributes to building a low-carbon society and its objectives are multifold. A resilient EU energy policy enables Member States to better cope with external supply shocks in both the long and short term; while coordinated and eventually fully integrated national energy markets bring advantages in terms of cost reductions due to economies of scale and the optimisation of the fuel mix. On the global level, all governments should be encouraged to develop national, regional and sector based green house gas emission reduction plans including CO2 pricing mechanisms. ERT continues to support the development of carbon markets as the approach that can deliver CO2 reductions at the lowest cost.
